Gianluca Ales was born in Rome in 1967, where he still lives and works for SkyTg24, Sky news in Italy. He began working as a journalist at 17 in 1984 covering criminal courtrooms. Then, after his law degree and Journalism master at LUISS university, he worked for daily Il Manifesto, ADNKronos Audiovisuals, Milano Finanza and satellite television broadcaster Stream in 1998, on TEAM TV news. After the transformation into STREAM NEWS, in 2001, he coordinated an d hosted the live G8 coverage in Genoa for broadcaster PRIMO CANALE Genova and all the Stream affiliated broadcasters. In 2002 he joined SkyTG24 and became foreign correspondent (particularly for crisis-stricken areas). Among the major events he covered were the Palestinian elections and the Gaza crisis, Arafat’s funeral, the Madrid attacks on March 11, the London and Istanbul attacks, the Lebanon war of 2006, the Bam earthquakes in 2003 and the tsunami in Indonesia in 2004, from Banda Aceh. He was embedded in Afghanistan several times, where he covered the 2004 elections and returned in the following years. He has a six year old son, Leonardo, who doesn’t understand why he goes off to war without shooting anyone.
