Can Dündar is a multiple award-winning Turkish journalist, author and documentary-maker. He was editor-in-chief of the centre-left Cumhuriyet newspaper until August 2016, has more than 20 books to his name and was sentenced in absentia to 27 years in prison after publishing a story on Turkish intelligence’s arms trafficking to Syrian radical Islamists. President Erdogan accused him of revealing state secrets and demanded a life sentence. After being arrested in 2015, spending three months in jail, and surviving an assassination attempt, Dündar fled his home country and settled in Germany.

Now, Can is editor-in-chief of the bilingual journalistic platform Özgürüz, a columnist for Die Zeit and a member of the jury of the European Press Prize. He is a recipient of many awards, including the Reporters Without Borders’ Human Rights Award and was honoured as European Journalist of the Year in 2017 as part of the Prix Europa. In November 2016 he received the Committee to Protect Journalists International Press Freedom Award.
