Solutions journalism - rigorous reporting on how people are responding to problems - is rapidly becoming an essential and widespread part of journalistic practice in the United States and around the world. New media and legacy outlets alike are turning to solutions journalism as a means of improving the quality and accuracy of their reporting, bolstering audience engagement, and increasing accountability by removing excuses for inaction.
This workshop will introduce participants to the practice of solutions journalism using case studies from around the world to illustrate how a media outlet's changed reporting frame around solutions can lead to a more productive public discussion and more engaged audience. Presenters will engage audience members in discussion about how to add a solutions frame to their beat, when is the appropriate time to do so, how solutions journalism enhances social engagement strategies, and look at current events through the solutions lens, asking and debating how we can find a more productive public conversation in the media.
