There's not enough charity from foundations or the public to support the journalism we need. Government support is fraught with conflict. The platforms won't come to the rescue. Every messiah turns out to be false. Meanwhile, newspaper companies are falling into the hands of hedge funds. Are they better off dead? Are we all better off starting from scratch and rebuilding from the ashes, reinventing journalism instead of just resurrecting old newspapers?
