Julie Posetti

Dr. Julie Posetti is Global Director of Research for the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) where she leads an international study into online violence against women journalists commissioned by UNESCO, and the Journalism and the Pandemic Project in partnership with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.

A multi award-winning Australian journalist and academic, she is a senior researcher affiliated with the Centre for Freedom of the Media at the University of Sheffield, and Research Associate at Oxford University's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism where she previously led the Institute's Journalism Innovation Project as Senior Research Fellow.

Posetti is author of Protecting Journalism Sources in the Digital Age (UNESCO 2017), lead author of The Chilling: Global Trends in Online Violence Against Women Journalists (UNESCO 2021), and co-author of Journalism, Fake News and Disinformation (UNESCO 2018) and Balancing Act: Countering Digital Disinformation while Respecting Freedom of Expression (UNESCO 2020).

A former editor, presenter and political reporter with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Posetti was also previously Head of Digital Editorial Capability at Australia's Fairfax Media (publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the Australian Financial Review). In this role, she co-produced the highly-awarded investigative podcast series Phoebe’s Fall. Additionally, she was based in Paris as Research Fellow and Editor with the World Editors Forum and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers in 2014/2015. She holds a PhD on the intersecting themes of journalistic source protection, media freedom and digital rights.
